Owl City music review


Owl city was created by Adam Young in his parents basement while he we working in a coca cola factory in Owatonna, Minnesota United States his home town. Young got noticed by uploading his music to my space and people and started liking his music and talking about it. The viral popularity helped him get his contract signing to Universal Republic in 2007. This lead on to him releasing songs like “Maybe I’m dreaming and the number one song in the UK “Fireflies”.

Description and Meaning

The song Fireflies by Adam Young is an electronic genre style of music what is computer made. The vocals in the song have a robotic kind of effect to it, Computerised vocals, the music builds up to a very full sound. Also it has a rock sound to the song as it builds up.
It's about this person who dreams of fireflies while he's sleeping. He likes to think that nighttime lasts for a long time, but his dreams always seem to end too soon. He'd rather be asleep dreaming about them then live in reality. He just describes the things that he and the fireflies do together. He starts to cry when he has to wake up, but he's consoled knowing that he might have the dream again
The man, who sang it, Adam Young, said he wrote this song about his insomnia and he wished he could day dream all the time.

Similarities to other songs

I think Owl city Fireflies is similar to other electronic, Emo and alternative rock bands/solo. Postal service, Innerpartysystem, Daft punk, Hellogoodbye, Breathe Carolina and 30H! 3.

What I like about it

I like the song Fireflies because the way Adam sings about when he was an insomiac and he wished he could daydream all the time. I also like the way he builds up music so it goes to a kind of electro rock song. Also the way he has put the effect of his own voice to have the same beat as the background music. I also like the way he has used a lot of different effects though out the song.

What I don’t like about the song

Over all the song is good but I don’t like how Owl city has copied the same style of music as Postal service, and the song Fireflies songs mostly the same as the Postal service song, The District Sleeps Alone Tonight. All music artists and their songs/music should be unique and I don’t this song or artist is.
Fireflies is a very catchy song but I think if you listen to it to much it will do your head in.

My overall opinion of the song

I think the song is unoriginal and repetitive. It is a song I have got bored of quick.

I will give this song 5 out of 10 because people must see something they like in the song even if I don’t.
